The door opens, a ‘tragedy’ pys out by itself.
I am immediately faced with the face of a man who looked as if he had just lost everything—I did hear everything that happened in that room, after all.
“Ahh…”
I stay silent, for him to finish his sentence.
“Ren-kun, you’re blocking our view!”
The voice of a girl.
“Judging by your reaction, there is someone outside…Yes?”And the voice of a dy.
“How-how long have you been standing out here?”He closes the door in a hurry.
“For about…10 minutes, maybe”“So you heard everything, ahh…”He has a sense of defeat written on his face.
“But, why would anyone do that???”Good question, honestly. I was too afraid to enter, is something I would prefer to not say.
“...I didn’t know when to enter, you guys seem to be having a lot of fun-”
“Right, right. Fun—For one person, at least.”My arrival is a misfortune for two.
“Nevermind that. So, tell me.”
“Why are you here?”
Upon hearing those words, I suddenly lose the courage I built up.
“Is someone you like, here in our club by any chance?”
I choke at that wild assumption.
“That’s not it-”
I quickly deny that.
“Right…”He ughs.
“Student Council sent you here?”I deny almost immediately, to spare him from the anxiety.
“So that leaves us with one possible conclusion.”He’s right. Yet, I still can’t find the words for it. I know why I’m here, but I can’t do anything about it. I want to say it, but it feels like something is sewing my mouth tight.
“Should I take the words out of your mouth?”
It’s been some years since I st joined a club at school after all.
“You’re here to join our club—I can’t believe it!”
I nod as he seems to forget about what just happened.
“...Welcome to the Philosophy Club.”
He sighs in relief and opens the door.
As I step into the room,
“Whoaa–A new member?!”
“This…was not part of my expectations”
“Well, I’m gd I lost that bet.”
I second the thought of the mature dy. I never would have expected such a warm welcome. They are…smiling at me, telling me it’s fine for me to join?
“Shimoda Yosuke, Css 1-1. Thanks for having me-”
I say without hesitation.
“ We’re gd to have you here.”
Why would they accept me? Just like that? I am usually met with cold gres, and stares from others as if I shouldn’t be around. This feels like snowing in summer…
I am more surprised by how I actually…did it. Just how did I end up here?
“So, Shimoda-san, what brings you here? Are you perhaps interested in philosophy?”
Her words bring me back to reality.
“It is the club with the least members,”
An answer to two questions.
“Shimoda…Is that supposed to be a compliment??”
He looks at me with a bnk expression.
“He’s not wrong, is he?”She counters, bumping into him. I went and did it again, I said something wrong. I need to fix this somehow…
“...I didn’t mean it to be offensive in any way.”
I try to clear off the awkwardness of the situation.
“Hmm, could it be that Shimoda-san is not very good with people? Correct me if I am wrong.”
She knows. How could she tell just by looking?
“ That is…true.”
I nod in response. They all seem to understand now…But, the room turns silent after that. I sense a bad omen, the awkwardness still remains.
“Wait, did we all just forget about that?”
His voice fills the room…Did I do something wrong again?
“What could it be? We did not brew any tea today, if my memory serves me right.”
“AHHH—Homework! I totally forgot!!”
That is… somewhat retable.
“Don’t tell me…You two really don’t know what I’m talking about?”
He sighs and clears his throat, and points to the girl on his right.
“This cute girl you see here-”I notice the barely visible blush on her face.
“Oh my, you two should get a room—”
It seems like I am not the only one who noticed.
“Half-twins, the only way she styles her hair, and a hopeless romantic—Shirakawa Arisa.”
“N-nice to meet you, Shimoda-kun.”
She keeps pulling her hair, while looking away from him.
“So this is what we forgot-”I still have no idea what they’re talking about, to be honest. Once again, he points to the dy on her left.
“Surely you know who this is, right?
Unfortunately, I don’t.
“Seriously?? Maybe she’s not that popur with the juniors…”
“Don’t mind his attempt at fttering me, I was never popur to begin with.”
She denies her alleged popurity…Maybe I just don’t talk to people that much, or should I say I don’t talk at all. I feel like I would know who she is by listening to others of the same grade…
“Ahh, the ‘Ice Queen’ herself. Ever desired by many guys—But, she has made it clear that she’s not interested in romance.”
“Not again…”
She covers her face with a book.
“The ‘big sister’ of our club—the stoic, Yoshizawa Shion.”
“You’re more than welcome to talk to me, Shimoda-san. I am not as cold as the masses say.”
She removes the book as her cover, smiling elegantly at me.
“Don’t forget about Yamaguchi Ren—Another free soul in this absurd world.”
I assume that he’s talking about himself. Wait…
Here, they stand before me. I can’t believe how clueless I was…To just realise that they had been introducing themselves to me…I should apologise about that too.
“I want to apologise.”
“...?”
They look at me with visible confusion.
“Why are you apologising all of a sudden?”
Arisa turns and tilts her head.
“I am pretty sure you did nothing wrong.”
“I…caused you to lose the bet.”
They facepalm as I make my ‘apology’.
“So it’s about that? It’s fine, it’s fine-”“We just got you as our new member, so…”
They don’t really seem to care, so I breathe a sigh of relief.
“But, to think that you, Shimoda, appeared in the entrance…What even are the odds of that happening?”
Ren remains in a state of disbelief, trying to milk his brain out for expnations.
“By the way, Shion-tan, how’d you know Shimoda-kun was outside?”
Arisa turns toward Shion, seeking answers.
“I would say that I just happened to be right, this time.”
“What does that mean?”
Ren joins in, also seeking for answers.
“There are cases where someone can be correct about something without actually knowing, the same applies here.”
Shion expins as wisdom emanates from her. I think this is what is called a fluke, or just being right due to a surprising upset.
“I see now…”
“Really? So…”
“What are your thoughts on this, Shimoda-san?”
Her sudden request for my input sends a slight shock to me.
“...I think it’s pure luck, Yoshizawa-senpai just got really lucky…?”
“I think that’s the best way to expin it.”Everyone agrees.
There goes another…not-so-boring day. Every single thing, the smallest of details…can lead to many fun discussions, that’s the club. That’s what the club is…
We part our ways, as the sky throws gold at us. Maybe I should join them tomorrow, the day after…and the day after the day after…They’re right.
How can I be right about anything, if I don’t know anything at all?
