Extra Chapter 4: The First Job That Changed Everything(Mikasa’s Backstory – Part 4)

  1. A Name Doesn’t Pay the BillsA name was nice.

But it didn’t put food on the table.

And it definitely didn’t pay for the bullet wound Souma patched up st week.

I sat on the couch, staring at the medical bill he left on the table.

Souma was in the kitchen, humming while making coffee.

“Just tell me when you’re gonna pay rent, kid,” he said casually.

I frowned. “I thought you took me in for free.”

He smirked. “I did. But now that you’re not dying, I might start charging you.”

  I scowled.

  He was joking. Probably.

  But still—

He was right about one thing.

I needed a way to survive.

And I only knew one skill.

  How to kill.

  2. The First Time I Became a MercenarySouma knew a guy.

  Of course he did.

A doctor who fixed up criminals always knew a guy.

  His name was Abe.

  A fixer. A middleman.

The kind of person who handled jobs for people like me.

I met him in a rundown bar.

He was bald, stocky, and had too many rings on his fingers.

He looked me up and down and frowned.

  “This girl?” he said.

Souma sipped his coffee. “She’s good.”

  Abe snorted. “She’s a kid.”

  I sighed.

  Then, without a word—

  I pulled out a knife.

I stabbed it through his table, missing his hand by an inch.

  Abe went still.

  The room went silent.

  I stared at him.

  He stared back.

  Then, slowly—

  He grinned.

“…Alright,” he said. “I like you.”

He slid a folder across the table.

“Let’s see what you can do.”

  3. A Simple Job. Or So I Thought. The job was easy.

  Infiltrate a building.Steal a briefcase.Get out.

  No killing required.

It sounded too good to be true.

And that should have been my first warning.

  4. Breaking Into a Corporate Office is Just Like Breaking Out of a LabThe building was a corporate headquarters.

  Fancy. Clean.

  Full of security.

  But to me?

  It was just another facility.

Just like the bs I grew up in.

  And I had escaped those.

  So I got in easily.

  Cameras? Avoided.Guards? Unconscious.Locks? Bypassed.

In less than ten minutes, I was standing in front of the briefcase.

  I picked it up.

  Job complete.

  Or so I thought.

  5. The Moment Everything Went WrongI turned to leave.

  Then—

  Footsteps.

  Someone was coming.

  I ducked behind a desk.

  The door opened.

  Two men walked in.

  Suits. Clean-cut.

  Not security guards.

  Executives.

  They were arguing.

  And one of them—

  Mentioned my old name.

  6. “Project Nexus is Still Active.”I froze.

My fingers tightened around the briefcase.

I had buried my old name.

  I had escaped that life.

  But this man…

He was talking about Project Nexus.

  And worse—

He said it was still active.

  I clenched my teeth.

  I wanted to leave.

To pretend I didn’t hear it.

To just take the money and go.

  But instead—

  I stayed.

  I listened.

  And what I heard—

  Changed everything.

  7. The Past I Thought I EscapedThe man was talking about new subjects.

  New children.

They were still making more like me.

  Still training them.

  Still turning them into killers.

  My blood went cold.

  I should have left.

  I should have walked away.

  But instead—

I grabbed a second folder from the table.

I stuffed it in my jacket.

And I disappeared into the night.

  8. The First Job That Wasn’t About MoneyWhen I handed the briefcase to Abe, he was pleased.

  He paid me in cash.

  I didn’t count it.

  Because money didn’t matter anymore.

The folder in my jacket did.

That night, I sat in Souma’s apartment.

  I opened the folder.

  Inside—

  Photos. Files. Reports.

  Names.

  Faces.

  Children.

  Just like me.

  I clenched my fists.

  My hands shook.

I had run from my past.

  I had tried to forget.

  But now—

  Now, I had a choice.

  Ignore it.

  Or do something.

  I didn’t sleep that night.

  And by morning—

  I had made my decision.

I wasn’t just Mikasa, the runaway.

I wasn’t just Mikasa, the mercenary.

  I was something else.

  Something new.

  And for the first time—

  I wasn’t just surviving.

  I had a purpose.
