Chapter Thirty-Four: Debating Jade

There were many handicrafts in the box, and the four teachers and students simply divided them up. Guan Tong and Fu Wen temporarily took charge of one side, responsible for identifying the largest number of ceramics, while Professor Wang identified other relatively complex things, and Gu Xiang followed behind Professor Wang to assist.

"Take a closer look at these jade pieces in the box and dont worry about the others for now, just pick out the genuine ones." Professor Wang pointed to a box of jade imitation products beside him.

"Uh-huh." Gu Mei nodded and carefully carried the box to one side.

She knew that Professor Wang was taking care of her, after all, she was a professional in jade identification, compared to porcelain and other things, logically speaking, she should have a better grasp on jade identification.

Moreover, she left an impression on Professor Wang that she was quite skilled at identifying jade and other such things.

Gu Mei opened the box and saw that the things inside were divided into three layers. The first layer was jade accessories, the second layer was hairpins, and the third layer was bangles.

These things are very beautiful jade in the eyes of outsiders who dont understand jade, and its no problem to take them out to cheat those who dont understand jade.

In Gu Mians view, these things are not worth mentioning. First of all, it is not clear whether the jade belongs to antiques or not. Just judging whether these things are real jade or fake jade, as a professional, she can still tell them apart clearly.

Generally speaking, there are two types of fake jade on the market today. One type has air bubbles on its surface and is called "pot jade", while the other type is actually stone.

Canned jade is a kind of artificial white fake jade, although it looks very similar to jade, but careful observation, its surface has air eyes. Moreover, the surface of the fake jade has micro fly feet, no matter how much manual friction is applied, it cannot have the same smoothness as real jade, and the texture is mostly too brittle.

As for the stone that pretends to be jade, at first glance it is no different from jade, but upon closer inspection it lacks the warmth of jade. Moreover, the color of the stone is too bright and not translucent, and its hardness is much lower than that of jade. A good method is to rub it, real jade will not change no matter how you rub it, and it will become even warmer, but the stone will immediately show stripes once rubbed.

Gu Mei took out a magnifying glass and casually picked up a plum blossom carved jade pendant with her right hand, carefully observing it. Its not hard to discover that under the magnifying glass, this jade pendant reveals some tiny air bubbles, which is obviously a characteristic of kiln jade.

As expected, there was no warmth coming from it at all when I touched it with my left hand.

Following the plum blossom carved jade down, several of them were made of ceramic jade, not only worthless but also lacking in carving charm.

However, there are a few that are not as easy to see through as the plum blossom carved jade, after all, the air hole is not the only basis for distinguishing between true and false jade.

Nowadays, the production of fake jade is getting better and better. Some artificial fake jade even has no air eyes, making it difficult for people to distinguish. Even some fake jade can scratch other glass, causing a great illusion in terms of hardness.

The hairpin in the second layer of the box is this kind, without air eyes, and high hardness. Without a certain understanding of jade, it is impossible to identify its authenticity.

"What are you laughing at?" Professor Liu noticed that Xia Jun was secretly laughing beside him and couldnt help but ask.

Xia Jun raised the slightly upturned corners of his mouth and said to Professor Liu in a low voice, "I dont know what Professor Wang is thinking, actually bringing out a small rookie like that. I heard that the one called Gu Can is still a junior."

Everyone starts from being a rookie, Old Wang brought her here, must want to cultivate her, but... Professor Liu shook his head and continued: "Looking at the way shes examining the jade, its really not great, checking one by one like this, when will we finish looking? It seems that later well have to go over and help."

"Thats right." Xia Jun withdrew his attention and continued to carefully appraise the thing in his hand.

Gu Mei had no idea what Professor Lius two people thought of her, and she continued to identify the box in front of her according to her own method.

She didnt actually take the time to carefully examine each one, and she wouldnt waste her time on things that were obviously fake at first glance, putting them aside immediately. The ones she would carefully look at were those that her left hand clearly told her were fake, but which her eyes alone couldnt judge as fake at a glance.

Experience is accumulated in this way. In the antique industry, counterfeit goods are always more than genuine ones. To better identify genuine goods, not only do you need to see a lot of genuine goods, but also deeply understand various counterfeit goods and compare the details between them.

This is also why the appraisal profession attaches great importance not only to theoretical knowledge but also to students practice.

"Not even one?" Professor Wang looked at Gu Ming in surprise.

Gu Xiang re-packed the boxes that had already been checked, nodded at Professor Wang: "Ive carefully examined them, theyre all counterfeit goods, not a single genuine jade, its possible this box is of a lower grade."

Professor Wang had some confidence in Gu Mians level, and upon hearing this, he didnt say much, but just took a rough glance, finding that what Gu Mian said was correct, and many things in the box could be identified as genuine or fake at a glance.

"There are still several jade product boxes over there, you continue to look, dont worry about the speed, whats important is to be careful and meticulous, as long as there is a little doubt, it cant be let go." Professor Wang reminded carefully.

Gu Xiang nodded in response, only to find that Guan Tong and Fu Wen had already found several suspected genuine items on their side, which were handed over to Professor Wang for inspection.

She casually opened a box and immediately discovered that the things in this box were much higher than the previous one, and all the jade products in this box were made of real jade.

Unfortunately, the real jade is either dyed or made to look old, and most of them are modern handicrafts, some of which can even be classified as high-quality imitations.

What caught Gus attention was that among these jade products, there were several imitation ancient jade axes that were quite interesting.

These ancient jade axe-shaped objects imitate the stone axes of the Neolithic era, with decorations on the surface that combine the beast face patterns of the Longshan culture in Shandong and the spiral patterns of the Western Zhou dynasty. The color of the jade has been dyed to look old. However, on its side is carved the words "Made in the Qianlong year", indicating that it was not intentionally forged to deceive people, but rather made out of interest in ancient objects. From this we can see the characteristics of Qing dynasty pseudo-antique objects.

On this device, there is also the number "Chenzi No. 12", and the word "Chen" is the numbering of Qianziwen. From this, it can be seen that the original collectors collection was very large, and it should not be a general persons collection.

The problem is that these jade products are nominally called handicrafts, and these ancient jade axes, in theory, are just replicas made after the Qing dynastys pseudo-antique devices.

However, after careful examination by Gu Mian, it was discovered that one of the imitation ancient jade axes was actually an antique, while the others were modern replicas. It seemed that this batch of handicrafts indeed contained hidden antiques.

The authentic Qing dynasty imitation ancient jade axe in her left hand transmitted a certain degree of heat, and a joyful feeling arose in her heart that only comes from touching real antiques. There was also a faint sound of the axe chopping something. The other several modern replicas only transmitted a weak heat, indicating their poor quality.
